First Day of School

I always enjoyed the first day of school. Reconnecting with friends, telling of my awesome summers travelling all over the US.

There was always excitement opening your pencil case and pulling out the brand new pencils and pens. The crisp new pages of the notebooks and pages in your binder.

I sat and watched first the high school students head off to school this morning. They didn’t seem as excited as the next group of kids. They looked groggy and more like they were doing the walk of shame the morning after a party.

The next group was the elementary school kids. They were excited sporting new outfits and posing for pictures on the front lawns.

The happiest group seemed to be the parents who had a huge smile as they left but an even larger smile when they returned home without the kids.

I miss all the excitement if the first day if school. I miss school supply shopping, the new text books and learning things I didn’t know before.

I think of going back to school. Then I remember all the homework, projects, stress and awkward moments.

I quickly change my mind and settle on going to Staples and buying myself some new pens.

I’ll find myself soon with the heartbreaking task of sending Adam to school for the first time. I’m sure I’ll be heartbroken but will soon after share the same joy as the other parents.

I have until 2014 to prepare for that. Time, no need to rush. I’ll need all the time I can get to prepare for that.
